Men’s Basketball Heads to West Point on Wednesday

WASHINGTON – American University men's basketball continues Patriot League play and begins a two-game road trip by heading to West Point to take on Army on Wednesday evening.

  • American had won four straight games in the series before losing to the Black Knights at Christl Arena in the Patriot League Quarterfinals last season, 89-66.
  • The Eagles shot 47.2 percent and went 11-of-26 from beyond the arc in the last meeting, but Army shot nearly 64 percent to outpace American.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • Last time out, American picked up its first Patriot League win of the season against Bucknell on Sunday afternoon. Colin Smalls led the team with 18 points in the 63-55 victory.
  • American will be playing a road game for the first time since Dec. 21 against George Mason. The Eagles travelled to Holy Cross last week but had the game postponed about an hour before tip-off.
  • One-possession games (decided by 1-3 points) and blowouts (decided by 21+ points) have not gone American's way this season, as the Eagles are 0-9 in those contests. The Eagles are 5-1 in games decided between four and 20 points.
  • Since stepping into the starting lineup in late November, Matt Rogers has been up to the task. He leads the conference and ranks second in program history by shooting 64.2 percent from the field this season. The 6-9 sophomore averages 9.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game.
  • Stacy Beckton Jr. is on milestone watch during his fifth season as an Eagle. He has now played in 101 career games is 54 points away from becoming the 33rd player to reach 1,000 career points. He currently has 90 career blocks, which ranks ninth in program history. He is two swats away from moving into eighth place on AU's all-time career blocks list and 11 away from being the sixth Eagle with 100 career blocks.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT ARMY
  • The Black Knights are 4-2 in Patriot League play and tied for third place in the standings. Army was bested by Lafayette on Sunday, 68-54. Army's 4-1 start in conference play was its best since the 2013-14 season.
  • Army leads the conference with 39.3 rebounds per game and ranks second in the PL with 71.3 points per game.
  • Jalen Rucker leads the Black Knights and ranks fifth in the conference with 15.3 points per game. The 2021 Patriot League All-Rookie Team honoree shoots 36.6 percent from beyond the arc and 78.9 percent from the charity stripe.
  • Josh Caldwell, the 2021 Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, averages 12.7 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per game. He averages 1.9 steals per game, which ranks third in the Patriot League.
