13th-Ranked Oregon Powers Past Volleyball in Front of a Huge Bender Blue-Out Crowd

WASHINGTON The largest home crowd in three years was a wonderful sight to see, but it wasn't enough to lift American University volleyball over a powerhouse squad in 13th-ranked Oregon. The Ducks (9-1) swept the Eagles (5-5) in straight sets by scores of 25-11, 25-23 and 25-11.

NOTABLE
  • Senior Fanny Ahman, in her third consecutive start at libero, kept a number of points alive and finished with a match-high 12 digs.
  • Junior Zeynep Uzen and sophomore Katie Putney posted seven kills and six kills, respectively, to lead the Eagles, while senior Carlie Fikse was the Eagles' leader with three blocks.
  • The loud and masked crowd totaled 1,324 and helped rally American to a nine-point lead midway through the second set, but the Ducks ultimately came back to win it.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles were outblocked as a team, 12-5, and the Ducks posted 39 kills to American's 19.
  • AU wasn't able to get much going in either the first set or the third, which saw Oregon hit .452 and .381.
  • The second set was when the Eagles shined, jumping out to a 14-5 lead.
  • Graduate student Chiara Bosetti served up three aces as part of a 6-0 run, and Uzen recorded five of her seven kills in the second set alone.
  • The Eagles still led 15-7 before Oregon began its comeback, and the Ducks ultimately tied it up at 17-17.
  • American then trailed 22-18 before keeping things interesting with a 5-2 run. An Uzen kill followed by an Uzen ace was good enough to fight off two set points, but Oregon All-American Brooke Nuneviller ended it with a kill.

NEXT UP
  • The Eagles will return to action on Saturday night at 7 p.m. to host Harvard in Bender Arena.
