Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Second-Half Surge Falls Short for Women’s Soccer

WASHINGTON – It was a tale of two halves on Sunday afternoon for American University women's soccer. After mustering only one shot in the first half, the Eagles fired off 13 in the second half but couldn't find the back of the net, falling to the reigning CAA champion Elon, 1-0.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • American only mustered up one shot and one corner kick in the first 45 minutes, but ratcheted up the pressure in the second half with 13 shots and six corner kicks.
  • Ashley Molz played all 90 minutes and led AU with four shots, including one on goal.
  • Cailin Panacek and Fisayo Iluyomade started their first games of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Elon found the back of the net in the 17th minute as Sarah Bevington flicked a header past Julia Kato.
  • Abby Fusca played a nice cross into the box to pick up the assist.
  • Elon outshot American, 5-1, in the first half, as AU couldn't muster a shot on goal.
  • In the 51st minute, Molz fired a shot on goal that was saved by McKenna Dalfonso. She ended up with five saves on the day.
  • Juliana Saling had perhaps the best chance of the day for AU, sending a rocket off her left foot that Dalfonso was able to deflect up and over the crossbar in the 64th minute.
  • Tate Jordan had two shots on goal down the stretch that Dalfonso was able to save, which kept the Eagles off the scoreboard.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • It was a quiet game from the ref's whistle as only nine total fouls were called and no yellow cards issued.
  • American outshot Elon, 14-10. It's the third time this season AU has outshot its opponent.
  • Kato had one save on the afternoon.
UP NEXT
  • The Eagles begin Patriot League play at Reeves Field against Holy Cross on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 3 pm.
  • AU Women's Soccer is proud to partner with the IamMore Foundation, which was founded by one of Coach Harper's teammates from the University of South Florida, Kat Renick (Formerly Leibbrandt), for Saturday's game.
  • The mission of the foundation is to reinvent the self-image of children who have been diagnosed with a chronic condition and to empower their identity to be immeasurably more than their diagnoses.
