Volleyball Falls 3-0 to Undefeated West Virginia

BUFFALO, N.Y. West Virginia's undefeated start to the season remained intact as the Mountaineers (6-0) handed American University volleyball a loss in straight sets on Friday afternoon at the University at Buffalo. The Eagles, who now stand at 4-4 overall, will face Duquesne in another neutral-site match on Saturday morning.

NOTABLE
  • Sophomore Katie Putney put together a strong match, leading American with 10 kills and a hitting percentage of .450. She also posted five blocks, while sophomore teammate Allie Burke tallied six.
  • Starting at libero, senior Fanny Ahman led AU with 12 digs. Juniors Rachael Bennett and Inbal Peleg also reached double figures in digs, tallying 10 apiece.
  • Kills and aces made the difference, with West Virginia recording seven aces to AU's one, and 40 kills to the Eagles' 26.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles looked to be keeping pace early on, tied at 9-9 in the first set, and trailed by just two at 16-14. Then the Mountaineers turned on the jets with a 7-0 run, and later won the set 25-16.
  • The second set was also tied for a final time at 9-9 before WVU's Adrian Ell served out a 9-0 run that put the set out of reach for the Eagles.
  • Putney had a fantastic third set with six kills, but American trailed most of the way and was unable to close the gap.
NEXT UP
