Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Continues Winning Ways at Delaware State

DOVER, Del. – Brooke Steel scored her first two career goals to push American University women's soccer past Delaware State on Sunday afternoon.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • With the tallies, Steel is the first AU women's soccer player to score twice in a game since Fisayo Iluyomade did it against USC Upstate on Aug. 25, 2019.
  • The Eagles have now won consecutive games for the first time since opening the 2019 campaign with two straight victories against UNC Asheville and USC Upstate.
  • Juliana Saling picked up her first assist since Aug. 25, 2019.
  • With their first blank sheet of the season, AU has now outscored Delaware State 9-0 in their five total meetings.
WHAT COACH HARPER SAID
  • "It's always nice to win on the road. The goals that we scored were a product of great patience and an overall commitment and hunger to find the back of the net. We are beginning to play the brand of soccer that we want to play in longer stretches of each match. The players are beginning to understand how the system can work on both sides of the ball and are starting to put their own spin and individual flare on it, which I love to see."
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • American's offense was aggressive right out of the gate, firing off nine shots in the first half, including three in a row in the 42nd minute.
  • All in all, AU placed six shots on frame in the first half but couldn't find the back of the net.
  • Delaware State placed their lone shot on goal in the 50th minute, but Julia Kato picked up the save.
  • The Eagles finally broke through with Steel's first goal in the 69th minute.
  • Saling set the play up with a cross into the box that found the head of Ashley Molz. Molz's header bounced up off the crossbar before Steel drilled the ball into the back of the net.
  • In the 77th minute, Steel picked up an insurance goal with help from Saling.
  • Saling sent the ball into the box and Steel redirected it with her head to the far post past the keeper to put AU up, 2-0.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • American outshot the Hornets, 15-2.
  • The Eagles had a slight advantage in corner kicks, 4-3.
  • Lilli Marcia started her second consecutive game and fired off four shots, tying for the team lead with Steel.
UP NEXT
  • AU concludes their four-game road trip with a short drive up Foxhall Road to take on George Washington next Sunday.
  • Kickoff is set for 1 pm on Sept. 5.
  • The Eagles will be back at Reeves Field on Thursday, Sept. 9 at 4 pm against Old Dominion.
