Women’s Soccer Shuts Out George Washington

WASHINGTON – Goals from Juliana Saling and Tate Jordan pushed American University women's soccer to a 2-0 road win over George Washington on Sunday afternoon. It's the first time AU has beaten GW on the road since Sept. 28, 2004.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • American has now won three straight games, their first such streak since August 2018.
  • The Eagles have finished with two consecutive blank sheets for the first time Sept. 9, 2018. Julia Kato has now held opponents scoreless for 233 minutes, just shy of the program top five for consecutive shutout minutes (Jen Liese, 270 minutes in 2001).
  • Saling scored for the first time since Oct. 9, 2019, while Jordan found the back of the net for the second time this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Saling put AU on top in the 13th minute, finishing a nifty set piece that began with an Emily Smith corner kick. Jordan Mahony played a dangerous ball in before Saling directed the ball just past the keeper.
  • That was the only goal of the first half as both teams managed seven shots in the period. Kato picked up five of her career-high nine saves in the first 45 minutes.
  • George Washington ratcheted up their offensive pressure in the second half, firing off 14 shots, including four on frame. AU's defense was up to the challenge, keeping the Colonials off the board.
  • American added some insurance in the 82nd minute, as Fisayo Iluyomade and Tate Jordan beat the GW defense. Iluyomade played the ball ahead to Jordan who fired the ball past the keeper for a 2-0 lead.
  • Jordan Mahony kept the shutout intact with an impressive kick save in the 88th minute.
