WASHINGTON - Three impressive performances in the opening matches of the season have earned volleyball junior
Zeynep Uzen the title of
GEICO Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Aug. 23-29.
Uzen posted two double-doubles in the Eagles' three matches, leading them to a 2-1 mark in the DC Challenge hosted at multiple locations. In AU's season opener at Georgetown on Aug. 27, Uzen tied her career high of 19 kills while also adding 19 digs to lead the Eagles to victory in five sets. Incredibly, Uzen's strongest set was the fifth, which goes to just 15 points. She put down six kills in the final set alone, including a stretch of three kills in four AU points. In a 3-1 loss at George Mason, Uzen added 10 digs to a team-high 16 kills.
In the final match of the weekend, the Eagles' home opener vs. George Washington, Uzen once again led AU with a 16-kill effort. For the week, she averaged nearly four kills per set and three digs per set.
Volleyball will be back in action on Sept. 3-4 in North Carolina, taking on North Carolina A&T, Norfolk State and UNC Greensboro.
