Swim & Dive's Mimi Watts Named GEICO Student-Athlete of the Week

WASHINGTON - Freshman Mimi Watts has had an outstanding season for American University swimming & diving, and she turned it up a notch this past weekend to earn GEICO Student-Athlete of the week honors. Watts won two races in school and pool-record times at the April Pools Invitational virtual meet on April 2-3.

The Eagles competed in the same events as Loyola Maryland, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette and Lehigh, with Watts beating out all swimmers from both schools in the 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly. With a time of 55.17 in the 100 fly, Watts broke the school record and the Reeves Aquatic Center pool record. In the 200 fly, Watts struck again, posting a school and pool-record time of 2:01.30. That smashed the previous pool record set by Hungarian Olympian and AU Hall of Famer Gabriella Csepe by more than three seconds. Csepe had also held the school record of 2:01.93, which Watts broke by over half a second.

The records by Csepe, both set in 1993, had stood for 28 years until this weekend. Both of Watts' performances were strong enough for first place and 20 team points each, and she beat out 36 other swimmers in the 100 fly. Watts scored another 15 points for American in the 50 free with a time of 24.14 that ranks as the ninth-fastest personal best in program history.
