Vinall Ties Program Record But Lacrosse Falls in Close Battle to Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. - It's been a long time coming, but American University lacrosse senior Emma Vinall finally finds herself atop the program record books as she ties with Elena Vagelatos ('99) with 179 career points after her five during the 17-15 loss to Bucknell on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Vinall scored four goals and added an assist to help lead the Eagles on the offensive end. With that, she now sits alongside Eleni Vagelatos ('99) in the top spot in program history with 179 career points. She also bumps up to 155 career goals and is now five away from tying Vagelatos in that category.
  • Senior Casey Harkins also highlighted the day's performances, finishing only one point away from her career-high with 11 off five goals and a season-high six assists.
  • Junior Hali Sibilia and sophomore Emma Hare also picked up season-highs with a pair of goals each. Seniors Erica Skowron and Kendall Goldblum closed scoring with one goal each.
  • Skowron and Vinall also added an assist each along with junior Stefanie Walsh.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Helena Morrison picked up a massive career-high in her third career start, grabbing 10 saves.
  • The Harkins sisters led the team with three ground balls each while Vinall added a team-high eight draw controls.
  • Senior Sarah Boney and junior Katie Pierce caused two turnovers each.
  • For an indication of just how tight the battle was between the two teams, look no further than the box score. The Eagles and Bison were even in shots, 35-35, draw controls, 17-17, caused turnovers, 13-13, and clears, 18-18. Bucknell held the advantage in ground balls, 25-18, while AU gave up only 20 turnovers to the Bison's 25.
  • Caroline Miller paced Bucknell with five goals, followed by a set of hat tricks from Mason Rode, Emma Cashwell, and Caroline Walsh.
  • Rode also led with eight ground balls and pulled down four draw controls alongside Ella Payer.
  • Caitlin Tucker and Lauren Kinnee split time in goal for the Bison and came away with 10 saves and seven saves, respectively.
  • Bucknell was the first to get on the board with a quick goal in the first minute. From there, it was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams as the Eagles drew even five times throughout the first 15 minutes of the game. AU struggled to pull together consecutive scoring pushes, though, and a pair of closing Bucknell runs built a four-goal margin heading into halftime, 12-8.
  • Vinall opened the second half with her fourth and final goal of the day off an assist from Harkins to bring the Eagles back within three, but Bucknell responded with a four-goal run to pick up the largest lead of the game at 16-9.
  • American chipped away at that lead over the final 20 minutes of the game, starting with a goal from Harkins. Over the last 17 minutes of the game, Bucknell didn't have an answer for the Eagles' offensive push, as AU put up five unanswered to land back within two at 17-15 with just under 2:30 left on the clock.
  • Vinall put up one final shot in the last two minutes of the game, but the Eagles couldn't quite complete the comeback as the final whistle blew with the score still 17-15.
