WASHINGTON - American University lacrosse attacker
Emma Vinall had a senior day that will live on in AU history. Already one of the most storied players to ever wear the red, white, and blue, Vinall entered the game tied with Eleni Vagelatos ('99) for the program record in career points (179) and needed five goals to break Vagelatos' record in scoring (160). By the end of the 60 minutes, she had eight points and seven goals, including two in the final minute, to solidify herself as the top offensive player in program history with 162 goals and 187 points during her 44 games as an Eagle.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Vinall led with a game-high eight points off her seven goals and one assist.
- Casey Harkins also closed with a memorable senior day, earning six points off four assists and a pair of goals.
- Juniors Hali Sibilia and Katie Pierce added a pair of goals each, and Sibilia also pitched in an assist for three points. Senior Erica Skowron and sophomore Emma Hare added the day's only other two assists.
- Vinall also led the team with nine draw controls followed by freshman Emma Fiore's career-high with six.
- Freshman goalkeeper Helena Morrison brought down seven saves for the day.
- The Mids had 10 players contribute to the score sheet, starting with a set of hat trick performances from Isabelle Thornburg, Gil Eby, and Nicole Victory.
- Jo Torres got the start in goal for Navy but was replaced by Abbi Young after coming up with only two saves and seven goals against. Young led with six saves in her 33 minutes of play while Annie Maloney closed for the Mids in the last three minutes.
- Navy led in shots, 34-29, including a 28-21 edge in shots on goal. The Mids also held an advantage in ground balls, 17-12, while the Eagles led in the draw circle, 19-15.
- Navy also went a perfect 20-for-20 in clears while the Eagles went 13-for-17, and hit 8 of 11 free position shots to AU's 1-for-3.
- Of the 13 Navy turnovers, seven were caused by the Eagles, including two each for junior Ashley Go and Sibilia.
- Navy took the early lead with a goal from Thornburg in the third minute, but the Eagles were quick to respond as Vinall put away back-to-back goals to give American the advantage. Included in those two goals was the one in the fourth minute which put her over Vagelatos' career points record.
- Navy tied it at 2-2 a minute later, and from there it was a back-and-forth battle as Vinall responded with another goal to retake the lead.
- A pair of unanswered Navy pushes around the 10:00 mark put the Mids back up by one, but clutch goals from Silibia, Harkins, and Pierce kept American tight as the Eagles tied the game three times heading into the final five minutes of the half.
- A late 3-0 run from Navy to end the stanza sent the teams into the break at 10-7.
- Navy continued to push in the second half, scoring the first six to take a 16-7 lead before another goal from Pierce, her second of the game and season, injected some much-needed energy into the American offense. Navy posted the next two goals but it was all American in the final 10 minutes as Sibilia hit her second to send AU on a 5-2 run to close the gap back down to seven.
- Vinall, who with 10 minutes left in the game was still three goals shy of breaking the AU career goals record after her early hat trick, put away four in the final seven minutes of the game, including the record-breaking goal with 55 seconds left on the clock off a pass from Harkins, and another with just over one second off an assist from Sibilia.
