Lacrosse Falls to Lehigh in Season Finale

WASHINGTON - Five players got on the board for the American University lacrosse team in its season finale against Lehigh on Wednesday, but the Eagles fell to the Mountain Hawks, 21-6, to close the 2021 slate.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Senior Casey Harkins paced the squad with a pair of goals in her last game as an Eagle. Classmates Erica Skowron and Emma Vinall closed with a goal each along with junior Hali Sibilia and sophomore Emma Hare.
  • Sibilia also added two of the team's three assists for a team-high three points on the day. Skowron added the other for AU.
  • Vinall brought down a team-high six draw controls while senior Sarah Boney and junior Katie Pierce led on the defensive end with two ground balls and two caused turnovers each.
  • Freshman goalkeeper Helena Morrison came up with seven saves in her 60 minutes.
  • Nine players got on the board for the Mountain Hawks, starting with a five-goal effort from Sondra Dickey. Katia Carnevale added four goals while Nora Giordano and Cecily Redfern each scored a hat trick.
  • Dickey also led in the circle for Lehigh with seven draw controls.
  • The Mountain Hawks had four goalkeepers on duty for the day, starting with Samantha Sagi who came away with three saves and the win.
  • Lehigh led in shots, 34-18, and ground balls, 14-11, and caused eight of the Eagles' 15 turnovers. American, on the other hand, caused five of Lehigh's 11 miscues.
  • Both teams capitalized on each of their offensive efforts early in the game, with Lehigh scoring off its first seven draw control wins and the Eagles finding the back of the net off its first three.
  • Harkins was the first to get on the board with a pair of unassisted goals in the first 10 minutes to keep the Eagles within striking distance. Vinall added AU's third, also unassisted, with just under 23 minutes remaining to cut what had been a three-goal gap down to two.
  • American struggled to build momentum through the remainder of the first half, though, as Lehigh hit a 9-0 run to enter the break with a 14-3 lead.
  • The Eagles picked up the pace to open the second half, as Hare and Skowron got on the board in the opening five minutes off a pair of feeds from Sibilia.
  • Sibilia added one of her own midway through the stanza, this time off an assist from Skowron, but it was all Lehigh down the stretch to end the game at 21-6.
