Field Hockey Secures Spot in Postseason with Senior Day Win

WASHINGTON - The American University field hockey team celebrated the careers of its three seniors - Noor Coenen, Gaby de Kock, and Lauren Fredricks - with a key 2-0 victory of Lehigh on Sunday.

The second shutout of the season for AU, it also secured the Eagles' spot in the Patriot League Tournament, set to begin on April 22 with the semifinal rounds. The Championship game is scheduled for Saturday, April 24.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Junior Maura Phelan put away her first career goal and sophomore Julia Kraft earned her second of the season, third of her career, to lead the Eagles.
  • Freshman Bryn Underwood led from the cage with four saves to earn her second career shutout.
  • As a team, the Eagles controlled the majority of the game, putting up 17 shots to Lehigh's six, and drawing 10 penalty corners while the Mountain Hawks only had three.
  • Maddie Kahn brought down six saves for Lehigh while Lenke Havas added a defensive save midway through the second quarter.
  • Both teams had some early look at goal to start the game, but it took until the second quarter for the Eagles to get on the board. Coenen drew the Mountain Hawks' goalkeeper off her line and blasted a shot toward goal, but Lehigh's Lenke Havas got her stick on it for the defensive save, sending the ball back toward the top of the circle. Kraft was there to collect the rebound, though, and sent back a quick shot into the upper right corner of the cage.
  • The second and final goal of the day came less than two minutes later after a Lehigh foul delivered AU a penalty stroke opportunity. With Coenen sidelined with a green card, Phelan was called up to take the shot and she sailed the ball into the upper right corner of the cage to bring the score up to 2-0.
  • The Mountain Hawks had one penalty corner opportunity in the third quarter, but couldn't manage to get a shot past the Eagles' defensive line until the fourth quarter. The opened and closed the stanza with a pair of shots, but Underwood came away with the save on both looks to complete the shutout.
  • The Eagles also had a flurry of attacks late in the game, but shots from Coenen and freshman Imogen Hatton were both saved by Kahn.
