Women’s Soccer Comeback Falls Short to Bucknell, 1-0

WASHINGTON  – American University women's soccer was unable to find an equalizer in the second half despite recording a season-high 13 shots in a 1-0 loss to Bucknell on Saturday afternoon.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • While AU had 13 shots, Bucknell fired off 23, leading Ryleigh Brown to pick up a season-high nine saves.
  • It's the most saves Brown has had in a game since Oct. 12, 2019 against Lafayette when she had 11.
  • Brown moved into fifth on the AU women's soccer all-time list for games played as a goalkeeper. With today's start, she has now suited up 38 times between the pipes as an Eagle.
  • All six seniors got to see the field for Senior Day.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Olivia Sekimoto had AU's first scoring chance, a shot that was saved by the Bucknell keeper in the sixth minute.
  • In the 23rd minute, Bucknell's Jenna Marek appeared to be breaking free of the defense before Asia Horne stepped in front to keep the game scoreless.
  • American had a couple more shots throughout the half, but most were outside the 18-yard box and off target.
  • Bucknell got on the board first thanks to a header from Chloe Christakos off a corner kick from Lea Tarzy in the 41st minute.
  • Both teams upped the offensive pressure in the second half, with Bucknell firing off 12 shots and American getting off eight shots.
  • Sekimoto had another scoring chance and put her second shot on target in the 49th minute that was also saved by the Bucknell keeper.
  • In the 74th minute, a long ball into the box from the other half of the field found Bucknell's Claire Mensi, but excellent goalkeeping by Brown stymied the chance and kept the game within one.
  • Emily Smith had AU's final scoring chance, as she beat her defender and fired a nice shot with some spin on it that Jenna Hall nabbed for her third save of the day.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Both teams recorded a yellow card in a physical first half of action.
  • Bucknell pushed the pace in the attacking third, resulting in nine corner kicks compared to just two for American.
  • Alysa Vazquez played all 90 minutes in the midfield and fired off a team-high four shots.
