Women’s Soccer Falls in Battle with Loyola, 1-0

WASHINGTON  – Loyola found the back of the net off a corner kick set piece for the only goal of the day as American University women's soccer dropped another tight division battle on Saturday afternoon, 1-0.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • The ball bounced around the far post and danger zone long enough for Sarah Bayer to put the Greyhounds on top in the 69th minute.
  • Alysa Vazquez once again led AU with five shots, including two on goal.
  • With another 90-minute performance in goal, Ryleigh Brown moved into the all-time top five for minutes played between the pipes (3,254). She is now 150 minutes away from moving into fourth all-time in minutes played as a goalkeeper.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Loyola's offense came ready to play and had a potential goal called off due to offsides just 68 minutes into the game.
  • After playing defense for the first 10 minutes of the game, American's offense got to work.
  • A nicely played ball into the box from Emily Smith found the head of Vazquez in the 27th minute, but the contact wasn't quite crisp and Loyola came away with an easy save.
  • Vazquez's second shot on target of the day was also saved by the keeper in the 37th minute.
  • The Eagles outshot the Greyhounds in the first 45 minutes, 4-2.
  • Brown's only save of the day came on a funky shot that required her to leap up and snag in the 67th minute.
  • The game-winning goal came off a set piece in the 69th minute.
  • With time running out, Smith and Vazquez fired back-to-back shots but to no avail as neither were on target.
  • Vazquez got tripped up inside the box, but no foul was called and time expired.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Both teams had eight shots on the day.
  • Loyola recorded two saves while AU managed one.
  • The Greyhounds had a slight advantage on corner kicks, 5-4.
