WASHINGTON - A dominant second half performance from the American University women's lacrosse team delivered the first career win for head coach
Lindsay Teeters on Wednesday after the Eagles surged to a 20-12 victory over Longwood.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Emma Vinall led the team's overall offensive efforts, tying her career-high with nine points off a season-high seven goals and two assists. Vinall also brought down six draw controls.
- The All-American is now tied for second in the program record books with 174 career points, sitting only five behind record holder Eleni Vagelatos ('99). She also continues to inch closer to Vegelatos' record in career goals (160) with 151.
- Classmate Erica Skowron also picked up a career-high on the day, matching Vinall with seven goals to surpass her previous best (5) from 2020.
- Senior Kendall Goldblum tied her season best with four goals and added an assist for a season-high five points. She also added a team-high seven draw controls.
- Sophomore Emma Hare and Stefanie Walsh added a goal each with Hare also pitching in an assist for a season-high two points. Senior Casey Harkins led with a season-high five assists.
- Walsh, Goldblum, and junior Katie Pierce picked up three ground balls each. Pierce and Walsh also added a pair of caused turnovers along with junior Ashley Go.
- Freshman Helena Morrison posted her second career start and walked away with three saves in her 60 minutes.
- Longwood was led by a pair of four-goal performances from Claire Libby and Haley Moomau. Only two other Lancers made the scoreboard while three added in assists with Dana Joss and Nicole Fordyce leading with three each.
- Goalkeeper Kylee Wright picked up five saves in her 60 minutes.
- Longwood pulled ahead early with four unanswered goals before American was able to settle into its rhythm offensively.
- Vinall was the first to get on the board for the Eagles after a feed from Harkins found her in front of the goal with just under 20 minutes remaining in the first half.Â
- Goldblum added her name to the score sheet a couple of minutes later, finding the back of the net in transition after picking up a ground ball on the other end.
- Another pair of goals from Vinall, with assists from Goldblum and Harkins, brought the Eagles to within one with less than 13 minutes remaining, but Longwood responded with a quick goal of their own off the draw to bring the score to 6-4.
- It was all AU down the stretch, though, as the Eagles closed with a 3-1 run off scoring efforts from Vinall and Skowron to tie the game at 7-7 heading into the break.
- American continued its run in the second half, starting with an early goal from Goldblum to pull the Eagles ahead. Skowron posted the next pair of goals followed by one from Hare to bring the score to 11-7 within the first six minutes of the half.
- A goal from Longwood's Libby Claire broke up the run briefly, but Skowron had the response less than 15 seconds later and sent the Eagles on an eight-goal run over the next 10 minutes with contributions from Skowron, Vinall, and Goldblum.
- Walsh added AU's final goal of the day with just under seven minutes left, breaking up the Lancers' closing four-goal run to bring the score to 20-12.
