Women’s Soccer Struggles in Return to Reeves, Falling to Army, 5-0

WASHINGTON  – The first home game for American University women's soccer in 514 days proved to be a tough one, as Army was able to capitalize on scoring chances en route to a 5-0 victory at Reeves Field on Saturday afternoon.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Ranked second in the PL preseason poll, Army moves to 3-0 on the season and has yet to allow a goal.
  • Ashley Molz led the Eagles with two shots.
  • AU held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Army got on the scoreboard first in the 10th minute. After nearly being called for offsides, Kaitlin Palaian snuck a choppy ball over the AU keeper that rolled all the way into the net.
  • In the 15th minute, Elise Urkov found a booming goal kick from Sydney Cassalia in stride, breaking away past the AU defense before placing a goal to the far post from the top of the 18-yard box.
  • Olivia Sekimoto had the best scoring chance for AU on the day, putting a shot on target off her left foot that was saved by Cassalia in the 23rd minute.
  • Urkov picked up the first of two assists in the 29th minute with a nice cross into the box that Erynn Johns would finish for a three-goal lead at the break.
  • AU looked poised to cut into the deficit after halftime, getting two quality chances from Tori Kent and Molz in the first five minutes of the half. Both were off target though, and the Eagles wouldn't have another shot the rest of the way.
  • In the 77th minute, Johns executed a nifty back heel pass that found the foot of Alyssa Carfagno for Army's fourth goal of the day.
  • Urkov and Johns reconnected again in the 86th minute for their second assist and goal, respectively.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Army had 11 shots on the day compared to six for American.
  • Ryleigh Brown picked up two saves.
UP NEXT
  • AU is scheduled to stay at Reeves for Senior Day next Saturday, March 27.
  • The Eagles are slated to face Bucknell at 2 p.m.
