WASHINGTON - The American University lacrosse team had a two-goal advantage at the half but fell after a late run from Lehigh on Saturday, 12-10.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Emma Vinall led the Eagles for the third time this season with her second consecutive five-goal performance, including a perfect 4-for-4 in free position attempts.
- Senior Kendall Goldblum was next with a season-high four goals, followed by sophomore Emma Hare who added her second of the season.
- Vinall also added an assist for a team-high six assists, and brought down a season-high 10 draw controls.
- Senior Casey Harkins added the only other assist on the day for the Eagles, pitching in the pass for Hare's goal midway through the first half.
- Senior Sarah Boney led AU's backline with three ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers.
- The Mountain Hawks also placed three players on the scoresheet, starting with Katia Carnevale who tallied a game-high eight goals off nine shots.Â
- Emma Eberhardt and Cecily Redfern added two goals and an assist each for three points on the day.
- Lehigh's Hannah Cermack closed with a game-high three assists.
- The Mountain Hawks picked up an early 2-0 lead before a pair of goals from Vinall and Goldblum brought the game to its first of eight ties.
- Lehigh's Carnevale retook a brief one-point advantage before back-to-back goals from Vinall and Hare gave the Eagles their first lead of the game at 3-4 with 16 minutes remaining in the first half. Another pair of unanswered Lehigh goals flipped the lead again before American hit a three-goal run behind efforts from Vinall and Goldblum to end the half with a 7-5 advantage.
- The Mountain Hawks controlled the pace to start the second half, putting up a quick three goals to retake an 8-7 lead within the first three minutes.
- Once again, American was able to fight back off goals from Goldblum and Vinall to take a 9-8 lead by the 23-minute mark. But Lehigh controlled the final 20 minutes of the game with a 4-1 run to take the final 12-10 lead.
