Helena Elbaek Reaches 1,000 Career Kills in Leading Volleyball to a Sweep of Lafayette

WASHINGTON - Senior outside hitter Helena Elbaek could not be stopped, posting 24 kills and a hitting percentage of .595 to lead the Eagles (2-1, 2-1 PL) in a sweep of the visiting Lafayette Leopards (2-3, 2-3 PL) by scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-18.

NOTABLE
  • Elbaek needed 15 kills coming into the match to become the 14th player in program history to reach the 1,000 kill mark for her career. She achieved that in a 10-kill second set and then blew right past it, committing only two errors in 37 attempts on her way to a match-high 24 kills.
  • Over half of American's 45 kills belonged to Elbaek.
  • Not since the 2015 season has a Patriot League player recorded more than 24 kills in a 3-set match.
  • Freshman Tyra Areskoug tallied 35 assists, ranking as the third-most in a 3-set match in the Patriot League this season.
  • Senior libero Chiara Bosetti and sophomore outside hitter Zeynep Uzen recorded 13 and 11 digs, respectively, with Uzen adding six kills.
  • Another strong hitting performance came from junior Carlie Fikse with six kills and a percentage of .556, along with a match-high three blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first set was tight until the halfway point at 16-16. From there, the Eagles closed out on a 9-2 run that included four kills from Elbaek.
  • American had to dig out of a big early hole in the second set after Lafayette jumped out to leads of 6-0 and 9-4.
  • With Elbaek serving, AU rattled off eight straight points to take the lead. The teams went back and forth and were still tied at 19-19 before the Eagles scored the final six points of the set.
  • There was less doubt in a strong third set for American that saw the Eagles hit .500 compared to .118 for the Leopards.
  • AU led by as many as eight, 24-16 before Lafayette fought off two match points, but an error ended the match in favor of the Eagles.
UP NEXT
  • The weekend series with Lafayette continues in Easton, Pa. with a 4 p.m. match on Sunday, March 14.
