BOSTON - The American University women's basketball team fought until the end, but couldn't bounce back from the hot first half shooting from Boston University as the Eagles fell to the Terriers in the Patriot League Tournament semifinal, 72-51.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Emily Fisher continued to take the reins for the Eagles, leading the team in scoring for the third consecutive game with 16 points off 6-for-13 shooting from the floor, 3-for-5 from three.
- Sophomore Karla Vres and junior Taylor Brown were the only other two to end in double-figures with 11 points and 10 points, respectively, while junior Jade Edwards was held to six points while bringing down a team-high eight boards.
- Fisher also pitched in a team-high five assists while Vres and sophomore Lauren Stack each brough down a pair of blocks.
- BU, ranked 11th in Division I for scoring defense, held American to its lowest shooting percentage of the season as the Eagles closed hitting 34.0 percent from the field (18-53) and 30 percent from three (6-20).
- The Terriers also put three in double-figures, starting with 23 points from Sydney Johnson who hit 8 of 14 from the floor and a near-perfect 5-for-6 from three. Emily Esposito added 16 followed by a dozen from Riley Childs.
- Katie Nelson, BU's top scorer with 12.5 ppg entering the contest, closed with only eight but led the team with six assists.
- Maren Durant brought down a game-high 14 rebounds.
- BU had one of its best offensive outputs of the season, shooting 51.9 percent from the field (28-54) and a 50 percent from three (7-14).
- The Eagles led through much of the first quarter behind an early seven points from Fisher, but four unanswered baskets from the Terriers gave them the edge heading into the final minute. A three from Fisher knotted the score back up at 14-14 before a layup from Esposito with five seconds left in the stanza rebuilt a two-point BU lead at 16-14 heading into the second quarter.
- The Terriers pulled away in the second quarter behind a 17-0 run as the Eagles struggled to connect on the offensive end. BU went 11-for-16 from the floor while AU hit only 4 of 17. By the time the two teams entered the locker room, the Terriers had picked up 42-23 lead.
- American started to click offensively early in the third quarter, but the Terriers matched them basket-for-basket to maintain an 18-point advantage. Another run late spread that margin to 27 after BU hit nine unanswered in the last five minutes of the stanza.
- The Eagles chipped away at the lead throughout the final 10 minutes, outpacing BU 21-15 down the stretch including a 7-0 run in the final four minutes to bring the score to 67-51. But the Terriers had the final say with five points in the last two two minutes to end the game at 72-51.
