WASHINGTON - Thanks to third-place finishes at the 2021 EIWA Championships, American University wrestling's
Gage Curry and
Tim Fitzpatrick have been named co-GEICO Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Feb. 22-28. By virtue of those performances, both wrestlers qualified to compete at the upcoming NCAA Championships.
Curry, a redshirt senior, and Fitzpatrick, a redshirt sophomore, took third place at 125 pounds and 174 pounds, respectively. Curry has qualified for the NCAAs in each year he's been eligible, and will look to get a chance to compete after the meet was canceled in 2020. He has never finished lower than fourth place in his four years at the EIWAs, and this third-place showing tied his career best. For Fitzpatrick, the NCAA qualification is his first and the third-place finish is a big jump from his eighth-place podium finish a year ago. Even more impressive was Fitzpatrick coming into the EIWA meet seeded seventh in his weight class.
Both wrestlers will have a few weeks to prepare for the NCAA Championships, set for March 18-20 in St. Louis.
