WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team (5-2) picked up its third-straight victory on Sunday with a 68-58 win over Radford. The game closed out a perfect 3-0 opening homestand for the Eagles, who will now be on the road for the first time since November 17 with a visit to Virginia on Tuesday.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Three Eagles landed in double-figures starting with a season-high 16 points from senior Emily Fisher, who also led the team with four assists.
- Senior Taylor Brown was also back in double-figures for the fourth consecutive game, posting 14 points alongside her team-high six rebounds and three steals.
- Senior Jade Edwards joined them with 10 points after being held scoreless against UMBC on Wednesday. She also nearly filled the stat sheet with five rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals.
- The Eagles had a season-best 12 turnovers while forcing 16 from Radford but trailed in rebounding, 35-31, including 12-8 on the offensive end.
- The Highlanders were also led by three double-figure performances, starting with Destinee Marshall's 13 points. Jackie Christ and Rachel LaLonde added 10 each, and LaLonde added a game-high 11 boards for the night's only double-double.
- The Eagles led in overall shooting percentage for the sixth time this season, shooting 50 percent (26-52) from the floor while holding Radford to only 39.7 percent (23-58).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Radford got out to a hot start, hitting an 11-0 run in the opening five minutes and prompting an early timeout from head coach Megan Gebbia.Â
- The Eagles found their footing coming out of the huddle, though, starting with a made layup from Edwards to get AU on the board. Senior Maddie Doring added a trey less than two minutes later while key defensive stops for AU, including three forced turnovers, kept Radford at 11.Â
- The two teams went back-and-forth in the closing minutes of the first quarter, though, as AU continued to pick up the tempo, but the Highlanders maintained a seven-point edge at the break, 18-11.
- AU continued to push in the second quarter starting with an early 10-0 run, including a pair of points from freshman Bailey Garbee to tie the game followed by a three from Brown to give AU its first lead of the night, 21-18.
- Radford called a timeout to regroup and posted a 7-2 run out of the huddle to retake the lead, but a key layup from senior Laura Graytok off the bench evened the score once again and sent the Eagles on a closing 9-2 run to close the half ahead by five, 32-27.
- After leading the charge on the defensive end in the first half, Fisher lit it up offensively in the second, posting eight of her 16 points in the second quarter as the Eagles battled to retain their lead.
- Radford closed the gap to two midway through the third quarter, but a quick four points from Fisher coming out of the huddle widened the gap once again. With just over 1:20 left in the stanza, a layup from freshman Kayla Henning delivered the Eagles their largest lead of the game at 53-41, but Radford had the final say with a turnaround jumper from Bryonna McClean to close the third at 53-43.
- It was a back-and-forth battle in the fourth quarter but the Eagles held on to their 10-point advantage behind key baskets from Brown and Edwards after Radford cut the lead back down to single-digits.
