Women's Basketball Outlasts Longwood, 62-58

FARMVILLE, Va. - The American University women's basketball team (7-3) outlasted a late push from Longwood (3-8) on Saturday to pick up the 62-58 road victory.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Senior Taylor Brown led the Eagles with a career-high performance, scoring 19 points off 7 of 12 from the floor, including a pair of three's, and a perfect 3-for-3 from the line.
  • Senior Jade Edwards was next, just missing out on her second double-double of the year with 15 points and nine rebounds. She added five steals on the day to tie her career-high.
  • Senior Maddie Doring and sophomore Riley DeRubbo also closed in double-figures with 11 points and 10 points, respectively. Senior Emily Fisher added eight assists to tie her career-high.
  • The Lancers were led by three double-figure performances, starting with 13 points and five steals from Kennedy Calhoun. Tra'dayja Smith and Briana Johns added 11 points each while Adriana Shipp added a team-high six boards off the bench.
  • The Eagles held Akila Smith, who entered the game averaging 16.3 ppg, 7.5 rpg, and 3.1 blocks per game to only eight points, four boards, and a pair of blocks.
  • American led in shooting with 47.1 percent (24-51) from the floor and 33.3 percent (4-12) from three.
  • Longwood converted AU's 20 turnovers into 23 points while the Eagles picked up 21 points off the Lancers' 18 miscues.
  • American dominated in the paint, 36-20, and led in second chance points, 8-5, with 10 offensive boards to Longwood's two. The Eagles held the Lancers to only 22 rebounds, well below their 34.4 average, while AU fell just below its season-high with 37.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Early miscues and fouls put the Eagles back on their heels to start the game. AU gave up four turnovers and put Longwood on the line four times within the first three minutes and the Lancers took advantage with an opening 6-2 run.
  • A three from Brown put AU back on the board, followed by a quick layup from DeRubbo off the bench to give the Eagles a brief 7-6 advantage. Longwood had the response to retake the lead but six more points from Brown and DeRubbo pulled AU back ahead, 13-11, by the media break.
  • The Eagles held on to the lead until the final second of the stanza when a three from Longwood's Adriana Shipp sent the Lancers into the break back up, 21-19.
  • The second quarter was the difference-maker for the Eagles, as they came out with a dominant defensive effort to close the first half.
  • AU hit 7 of 15 from the field while holding Longwood to only 3 of 11 for an 18-8 run through the stanza.
  • Longwood started the quarter off well, though, picking up a couple of brief four-point leads before baskets from Doring and Edwards brought American back within reach. Back-to-back layups from Edwards and Fisher sent AU on a 14-2 run, including six from Edwards alone, to send American into the break with a 37-29 lead.
  • The Eagles opened the second half much like the first, with early turnovers sending Longwood on a 10-0 run to land back within one before a clutch layup from DeRubbo put American back on the board with 3:34 left in the quarter.
  • Longwood retook the lead off a layup from Akila Smith, but AU closed strong with five more points from Edwards to retake a 47-43 lead heading into the fourth.
  • It was a back-and-forth battle in the fourth as Longwood pushed to make it a one-possession game once again at 58-55 with just over three minutes left on the clock.
  • A layup from Brown and pair of free throws from Edwards put the Eagles out of reach at 62-55 with nine seconds left on the clock. A buzzer-beater trey from Longwood's Briana Johns closed the game, but it was too little too late for the Lancers.
