Men's Basketball Heads to Mount St. Mary's on Saturday

WASHINGTON – Coming off a confidence-building win against Saint Francis on Wednesday, American University men's basketball will be on the road once again to face Mount St. Mary's at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11.

  • The all-time series is as close as it gets, with AU holding a 34-33 advantage.
  • The Eagles captured the last meeting 82-76 in Emmitsburg on Dec. 17, 2019, snapping a three-game win streak for the Mount in the series.
  • American's free-throw shooting was key in the 2019 win, with the Eagles hitting 24-of-30 (80 percent) including 7-of-8 in the final minute.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT AMERICAN
  • American had been on the road for eight straight games prior to this past Wednesday, and the homecoming was a sweet one with the Eagles snapping a seven-game win streak.
  • The Eagles shot lights-out from 3-point range in the 83-73 victory, matching a season-high with 10 triples. Their percentage of 66.7 percent made from long range tied for fourth in program history and was AU's best performance since shooting 78.6 percent from long range on Jan. 22, 2014.
  • Johnny O'Neil led the 3-point rampage, draining all five of his attempts from beyond the arc vs. Saint Francis. He went for a career-high 22 points on 8-of-9 from the field, adding five rebounds and a block. Colin Smalls was 8-of-13 from the field with 20 points and added a team-high four assists to his stat sheet.
  • A mix of injuries and growing pains for the young core proved tough to overcome in the first month of the season. Valuable contributors Christian Lorng and Ben Lubarsky have yet to suit up this season, while seniors Connor Nelson and Josh Alexander have both missed games this season already. American has employed four different starting fives through 10 games.
  • Stacy Beckton Jr. is on milestone watch during his fifth season as an Eagle. He is 88 points away from becoming the 33rd player to reach 1,000 career points. After picking up three blocks against Stony Brook and one vs. Saint Francis, he now has 89 career blocks. He is three swats away from moving into eighth place on AU's all-time career blocks list and 11 away from being the sixth Eagle with 100 career blocks.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT MOUNT ST. MARY'S
  • Mount St. Mary's lost at Santa Clara, 88-77, on Tuesday night, and stands at 3-7 overall this season.
  • Nana Opoku led the way for the Mount at Santa Clara with a season-high 21 points while Mezie Offurum matched his season with with 18. 
  • Opoku has now posted three consecutive games with double figures in scoring. He went 10-for-11 from the field against the Broncos and is now shooting a team-best 56.5 percent on the year. 
  • The Mountaineers had 25 assists on the team's 34 field goals at Santa Clara.  For the season, the Mount has assisted on 54.2 percent of its field goals made this year, the second-best mark in the NEC.
  • Mount St. Mary's won the NEC Tournament last year, earning the school's sixth NCAA Division I Tournament bid. The Mount fell to Texas Southern, 60-52, in the NCAA First Four.
