CHAMPS! No. 17 Field Hockey Defeats Lafayette for 12th PL Title in Program History

WASHINGTON - For the 12th time in program history, the No. 17 American University team was crowned the Patriot League Champion after outlasting Lafayette, 2-1, on Saturday at Jacobs Complex.

NOTEWORTHY
  • Junior defender Charllene Boshoff was involved in both goals on the day starting with the assist on the opener from sophomore Emily Horace. She added one of her own to secure the win, this time with an assist from senior Georgia Davies.
  • Saturday marked the second goal of the season for both Boshoff and Horace.
  • Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Year Bryn Underwood picked up a pair of saves in her full 60 minutes.
  • American held the advantage in shots, 11-7, and penalty corners, 12-5.
  • Lafayette forward Felicitas Hannes scored the Leopards' only goal of the day with an assist from PL Offensive Player of the Year Audrey Sawers.
  • The Eagles also won their 12th Patriot League regular season title after going undefeated in league play for the 10th time in program history.
ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
  • American placed four on the Patriot League All-Tournament Team, starting with Tournament MVP Bryn Underwood. The sophomore goalkeeper opened the tournament with a shutout against four-seed Lehigh, bringing down five saves before adding another pair on Saturday for seven total.
  • Fifth-year Noor Coenen, senior Georgia Davies, and junior Charllene Boshoff joined Underwood as members of the 11-player All-Tournament Team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • It was a tightly battled game from the start with American pushing early, picking up three penalty corners in the first five minutes of play. The opening shot from Hannah Moser was picked up by Leopards goalkeeper Hailey Abbott while the next attempt from Coenen sailed just wide of the cage.
  • The Leopards picked up three looks of their own by the end of the stanza, but neither team managed to gain the advantage as they entered the break at a 0-0 stalemate.
  • The second quarter played out much the same as both teams battled in the midfield. A pair of corner opportunities by Lafayette nearly gave them the early lead but a clutch save from Underwood kept the two teams even.
  • The Eagles picked up a pair of penalty corners in the final minute with Davies on the line for both insertions. The first shot from Coenen was blocked wide of the cage but the next corner found the stick of Boshoff who sent in a beautiful ball for a redirect from Horace to give AU a 1-0 lead at halftime.
  • Boshoff extended that lead within the first five minutes of the second half, blasting in a shot from an insertion from Davies to bring AU up 2-0.
  • Lafayette cut into that lead less than four minutes later after a penalty corner of their own with Felcitas Hannes sending the ball home off a pass from Audrey Sawers.
  • With the score still 2-1 and less than three minutes remaining in the game, Lafayette pulled goalkeeper Hailey Abbott and subbed in Alix Talkow, desperate to repeat their performance on Thursday and find the equalizer late. But the Eagles defense held the Leopards attack at bay to close the game with the 2-1 victory.
