Men’s Basketball Falls to Hot-Shooting UMBC

CATONSVILLE, Md. – American University men's basketball couldn't keep up with the fast-paced UMBC offense on Tuesday night, falling 98-67 at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Johnny O'Neil scored the first points of the game, draining a corner 3 on American's first possession.
  • The Eagles got out to a 7-4 lead, but UMBC responded with a 13-3 run to take a seven-point lead with 13:11 left in the first half.
  • AU put a couple solid possessions together, including a Marvin Bragg steal that led to a transition layup for O'Neil, but couldn't put a dent in UMBC's lead.
  • Three 3-pointers for the Retrievers in the final 91 seconds of the half gave them a 45-31 lead at halftime.
  • The second half was more of the same for UMBC as the Retrievers continued to have success from beyond the arc.
  • The Eagles were unable to cut the deficit to less than 14 points for the rest of the way as UMBC shot 65.5 percent from the field and 69.6 percent from 3-point range for the whole game, both season-bests.
