American Falls 3-1 to Colgate in Patriot League Volleyball Championship

HAMILTON, N.Y. - The American University volleyball team had an impressive turnaround to its season after some early struggles, but a 17th Patriot League title eluded the Eagles this year as host and top seed Colgate prevailed in four sets. Under 33rd-year head coach Barry Goldberg, American reached the title match for the 20th time in 21 seasons since joining the PL in 2001.

NOTABLE
  • Zeynep Uzen and Carlie Fikse, the Eagles' two All-Patriot League selections this season, were also both named to the Patriot League All-Tournament Team.
  • Uzen closed out the season with her 15th double-double of 12 kills and 10 digs.
  • AU's leader in kills for the championship match was Katie Putney with 13, and she added four blocks.
  • Uzen was one of four Eagles to reach double figures in kills along with Chaira Bosetti (17), Inbal Peleg (12) and Rachael Bennett (10).
  • Allie Burke led all players with five blocks, and Esma Sipahi tallied 30 assists to lead AU.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After five early ties, American took a 13-10 lead in the opening set. It would prove to be its largest, with Colgate rattling off a 7-0 run to go up 17-13.
  • The Eagles were within a point at 19-18, but the Raiders came up with a couple of aces on their way to a 25-21 set win.
  • Uzen was nearly without a kill in the first set until getting one late, but Putney came up with three to lead AU. Both teams struggled with attacking errors and hit in the negative percentages for the set.
  • American set the tone early in the second set with a 4-0 run that included back-to-back Fikse kills, and soon led 7-2. AU never trailed in eventually winning the set 24-19.
  • Uzen found her stride with four kills in the second set, and the Eagles' blocking game was particularly strong with Burke and Putney combining for four by the end of the second set.
  • Colgate limited its attack errors for the first time in the third set and pulled ahead for good after 11 early ties. The Raiders used a 4-0 run for a 16-12 lead and never trailed again.
  • The fourth set got away from AU early on and saw the Eagles trying to play catch-up the entire way.  American cut a seven-point deficit down to four, 24-20, but could not complete the comeback.
