WASHINGTON - An exciting night saw American University wrestling jump out to a 13-0 lead, but the Eagles struggled in later matches and ultimately lost 20-16 to visiting George Mason. AU won its first three bouts but only one more the rest of the way.

Highlights

• Heavyweight Isaac Righter faced Ramses Montalvo in the opening bout. He led 4-1 after getting two takedowns in the first period, and ultimately won 6-2 to put AU on top 3-0.
• American's wrestler of the match was freshman Max Leete, who wasted no time in getting the Eagles some bonus points in the second bout of the night. 
• Leete pinned his opponent Ben Monn in just 1:09 to get the crowd into it and get six points for AU.
• Freshman Jack Maida dominated his match at 133 pounds. He was up 6-2 after the first period and completed his bout with six takedowns, an escape and riding time for a 14-3 major decision over Anthony Glasl.
• The Eagles lost their next three bouts at 141, 149 and 157 before redshirt junior Tim Fitzpatrick provided some spark.
• Fitzpatrick and Mason's Tyler Kocak wrestled tight and were locked in a 1-1 tie after regulation.
• With 15 seconds left in the two-minute sudden victory overtime, Fitzpatrick got the takedown for a 3-1 win.
• That would prove to be AU's last victory of the night. Ben Root lost a narrow decision, 4-2 at 174 pounds, but Mason took control at both 184 and 197 for the 20-16 dual victory.
