Women's Soccer Falls Short against Lehigh

WASHINGTON– A 68th-minute goal from Emily Smith drew American University women's soccer one goal closer, but a two-goal cushion proved too much to overcome on Saturday afternoon as Lehigh held on for a 2-1 win on Senior Day at Reeves Field.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Smith scored her second goal of the season and fifth of her career.
  • Tate Jordan registered an assist on the goal, her third of the season. She now has 13 points this season.
  • Alysa Vazquez also picked up her fourth assist of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Lehigh was ready to play immediately, firing four shots off in the first five minutes of action.
  • The Mountain Hawks started the scoring with a goal by Courtney Supp in the 13th minute. Julianna Bonner fed her a great pass to the near post and Supp dribbled around Julia Kato to score her fourth goal of the season.
  • American responded by controlling possession for the final 20 minutes of the first half and ended up matching Lehigh with seven shots in the period.
  • Lehigh got some breathing room in the 59th minute after Hope Flenigan sent a long service ahead to Rebecca Van Siclen, who beat AU's keeper and last defender before firing a goal into an empty net to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Smith got one back for AU after Jordan sent a corner kick into the box that first found the head of Vazquez. Smith then put her right foot on the ball to redirect it into the net for a goal to cut the deficit to one.
  • Asia Horne made a remarkable stop with her head on the endline in the 75th minute to keep the Eagles in striking distance.
  • Two more AU shots on goal were saved by Lehigh and the Mountain Hawks held on for the 2-1 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • This was the first game in the series since 2010 to be decided by a score other than 1-0.
  • The Eagles held a 12-10 advantage in shots taken.
  • American also held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks.
UP NEXT
  • American will conclude the regular season with a home match against Loyola Maryland on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 12 PM.
  • AU is one of four teams (Army, Lafayette, and Colgate) vying for the final spot in the Patriot League Tournament and must win on Wednesday to have a chance at qualifying for the first time since 2015.
  • As a reminder, admission is free for all AU women's soccer home games.
