Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Outlasts Army, 1-0

WASHINGTON – In front of the largest women's soccer crowd since 2010, American University women's soccer knocked off Army West Point on Saturday afternoon, 1-0.

QUICK NOTABLES
  • Emily Smith scored her first goal since Oct. 19, 2019.
  • Tate Jordan and Brooke Steel picked up assists on the play. It was Steel's first career helper.
  • With the win, head coach Marsha Harper earned her first home victory at the helm of AU women's soccer.
  • American has now started 2-1-1 in Patriot League play, its best four-game start in conference action since going 3-1 in 2013.
  • There were 915 fans were in attendance for Phil Reeves District Day and Alumni Weekend, the highest women's soccer attendance since 1,511 fans watched AU-Georgetown on Aug. 21, 2010. 
  • This victory was AU's first over Army since Oct. 11, 2009, a 2-1 win at Reeves Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half was a defensive battle with neither side creating many quality chances.
  • Alysa Vazquez got into the box in the 44th minute, but had her shot saved by Army.
  • In the 69th minute, American was able to string some passes together and generate a dangerous chance.
  • Jordan hit a short pass to Steel at the top of the box and then placed a pass through Steel's legs that found a waiting Smith.
  • Smith pivoted and fired a shot into the top right corner to give AU a 1-0 lead.
  • Army generated a corner kick less than a minute later, but AU's defense held strong and only allowed one shot in the final 20 minutes of action to cement the shutout.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Julia Kato picked up her third clean sheet of the season as her and the backline held Army to only one shot on goal.
  • Both teams managed seven shots in the defensive showdown.
  • Only 12 fouls were called, although Asia Horne did receive a yellow card.

  • American will hit the road to face Boston University on Saturday, Oct. 9 at 1 pm. 
  • The Eagles will return to Reeves Field on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 3 pm for Very Important Professors (VIP) Day.
