WASHINGTON - In the interest of public health and in accord with American University's commitment to maintaining a vaccinated community on campus, AU Athletics will require proof of vaccination for all spectators 12 and older when attending sporting events inside Bender Arena. This policy is effective October 21, 2021.
Proof of vaccination will be required for entry to all men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball and wrestling competitions. Those with a valid AU ID can show it as proof due to American University's policy of vaccination attestation.Â
Masking inside Bender Arena will remain mandatory for spectators regardless of vaccination status.
"Instituting this policy keeps us aligned with our campus health policies and best allows us to safeguard the well-being of our spectators and teams during home contests," said Billy Walker, Director of Athletics and Recreation. "It has been a great start to the year having fans, alumni and students back in Bender Arena - and we look forward to safely hosting even more fans as we head into the winter."
Proof of vaccination can be achieved by showing one's vaccine card, a photo of one's card or a digital vaccine record. The vaccine card must show two dates for Moderna/Pfizer and one date for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. UPDATE: While negative tests were initially accepted at the time this policy was implemented, that is no longer the case. Proof of vaccination is required.
Children under the age of 12 do not need to provide proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test but must adhere to all other AU safety policies including wearing a mask while indoors (ages 2 and over). More ticket information for Bender Arena can be found HERE.
