WASHINGTON - The seven-seeded American University women's basketball team (13-1, 8-10 PL) put up one of its strongest defensive performances of the season, but couldn't make up No. 2 Boston University's (17-12, 12-6 PL) 16-for-18 shooting from the line and fell to the Terriers in the Patriot League quarterfinal round, 46-44.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Sophomore Jade Edwards led the Eagles with 14 points followed by 10 from classmate Taylor Brown.
- Edwards also paced the team on the boards with nine rebounds, just missing the double-double.
- The Eagles closed shooting 34 percent (18-53) from the floor, 20 percent (4-20) from three, and 66.7 percent (4-6) from the line.
- The Terriers were led by three double-figure efforts, starting with Maren Durant with 12, followed by Katie Nelson (11) and PL Rookie of the Year Maggie Pina (10).
- BU hit 35.9 percent (14-39) from the field, 28.6 percent (2-7) from the perimeter, but went 16-for-18 (.889) from the line.
- The Eagles held the advantage in the paint, 26-18, in points off turnovers, 15-9, on the fast break, 4-0, and off the bench, 14-2.
- Neither team was able to do much in the opening minutes with the Terriers holding a 5-2 lead until the 3:02 mark when a trey from senior Morgan Bartner tied the game for the first time at 5-5. By the end of the stanza, BU picked up a one-point lead at 10-9 after five late free throws from Boston's Nelson.
- A three from junior Indeya Sanders tied the game back up at 14-14 at the 6:40 mark in the second quarter and sent the Eagles on a 7-0 run to build their largest lead of the game at 18-14.
- The Terriers retook a four-point lead in the final two minutes, but back-to-back baskets from Brown and senior Kaitlyn Marenyi sent the teams into the locker room tied for the fourth time at 22-22.
- Edwards opened the second half with a fast break layup after picking up her third steal of the game to give AU its last lead of the game, 26-24.
- Neither team was able to do much offensively in the third quarter as BU picked up a one-point lead off a 5-4 run in the stanza.
- The Terriers picked up an early six-point advantage after back-to-back baskets from Nelson and Riley Childs. The Eagles cut that lead down to four seven times before a pair of closing treys from Edwards closed the game at the two-point deficit.
