WASHINGTON - American University men's basketball senior
Sa'eed Nelson needed two points to break the school scoring record on February 26. He got 30, extending his streak of 20-plus point games to six, and led a dominant victory over Lafayette that clinched a top-three seed and a home playoff game for the Patriot League tournament. For his efforts in that game and a later 43-point win over Holy Cross, Nelson was named the GEICO Student-Athlete of the Week.
Nelson broke the record with a mid-range jumper on his first shot attempt of the day. It was telling, as he went 14-of-18 from the field and reached a season-high 30 points.Â
In the win over Holy Cross on Feb. 29, Nelson added a game-high eight assists to nine points.Â
With 272 steals, Nelson is 24 away from passing Jarion Childs, who is currently AU's all-time steals leader with 295 thefts from 1996-00. Additionally, with 77 steals this season, has a chance to move up several spots on AU's single-season steals list. He is currently in fifth, but 11 thefts stand between him and passing Mark Nickens for third place. Nickens had 87 during the 1982-83 season. Nelson is currently third on AU's all-time assists list, just six away from passing Derrick Mercer for second place. Mercer had 524 helpers from 2005-09.Â
