WASHINGTON - Sophomore
Jade Edwards picked up her second double-double of the season to lead the American University women's basketball team (9-12, 5-6) to its first overtime win of the season with a 67-62 decision at Army West Point (5-17, 1-10).
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Edwards was back in the driver's seat for the Eagles for the ninth time this season, picking up her second double-double of the year, fourth of her career, with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Edwards shot 8-for-15 from the field, 2-for-6 from three, and 5-for-9 from the line to just miss tying her career-high from earlier in the season (24).
- Senior Kaitlyn Marenyi also put up a milestone performance, becoming the 13th player in program to reach 100 made three's en route to an 18-point performance. She went 4-for-13 from the floor, 2-for-6 from three, and 8-for-10 from the charity stripe.
- For the second time this season, junior Indeya Sanders was clutch for the Eagles in the final second of regulation. With less only seven seconds left on the clock and AU trailing by two, 56-54, Sanders took possession after an Edwards defensive rebound and laid in the fast break layup to send the game into overtime.Â
- The Edwards-Sanders pairing was also responsible for sending the game at Colgate into extra time, but that time it was Sanders who fed the ball in to Edwards to sink the final-second jumper.
- The Eagles closed shooting 39.6 percent (21-53) from the floor, 36.8 percent from three (7-19), and 66.7 percent (18-27) from the charity stripe.
- Army was paced by a 15-point effort from Kate Murray followed by 11 from Hope Brown. Alisa Fallon led on the boards with 15 rebounds while Sarah Bohn picked up five steals.
- The Black Knights ended with 31.1 percent (19-61) from the field, 21.2 percent (7-33) from three, and 63.0 percent (17-27) from the line.
- American edged Army on the boards, 42-41, and held the advantage in points in the paint, 28-20, and fast break points, 17-7. The Black Knights led in points off turnovers, 19-13, after forcing 19 from AU. The Eagles forced 16 Army miscues.
- AU seemed to take control of the game early after a layup from sophomore Maddie Doring at the 8:00 mark sent the Eagles on a 13-2 run to take a 16-7 lead with 4:22 left in the stanza.Â
- A couple of three's from Army's Bohn and Lindsey Scamman halted American's advance, though, and sent the teams into the first break at 19-15.
- The Eagles built up as much as a 10-point lead midway through the second after baskets from Marenyi and Edwards, but late three's came back to haunt AU again as Army cut into that lead in the final 3:30 to end the half at 28-25.
- American struggled to find its footing offensively in the third, hitting a 4:00 drought as Army retook a five-point lead at 34-29. A layup from Edwards and made free throw from Doring got AU rolling again, and an Edwards three put the Eagles back within one, but Army hit another late run to take a 45-38 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
- Army led by as much as nine in the fourth quarter before Marenyi's second three of the day cut the gap back down to six.
- With 2:30 left on the clock, Edwards drew the and-one on a layup to tie the game at 50-50.
- In the final minutes, though, the Eagles were forced to play catch-up as Army continued to edge ahead. AU had fouls to give and wound down the clock before putting Army on the line with less than 20 seconds in regulation.
- With only seven seconds on the clock, Army's Kate Murray took the line with the chance to pick up a three-point lead but failed to capitalize on her second attempt. Edwards collected the rebound and fed it to Sanders who faced off with Army's Hope Brown on the fast break. A quick duck in along the baseline gave Sanders the clear look, and she sank the layup with just under a second to force the OT period.
- Army picked up the first advantage in extra time after a pair of free throws from Brown at the 2:04 mark.Â
- A layup from sophomore Emily Fisher tied the game back up at 58-58, and a foul on the other end put Marenyi on the line where she sank two to give AU its first lead since the opening minute of the third quarter.Â
- An Army turnover gave the Eagles a chance to add to the separation, and once again it was Marenyi who capitalized with a clutch layup to bring the score to 62-58 with 31 seconds left.
- It was all about free throws down the stretch, with Marenyi going 4-for-6 in the final 20 seconds and sophomore Taylor Brown adding one more to close with the final five-point lead at 67-62.
- This was only the second overtime game for American since the 2017-18 season, and the first OT win since the 71-63 victory over Army at home on February 3, 2018.Â
