Women's Basketball Wins Nail-Biter Over Boston U.

WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team (11-14, 7-8 PL) picked up one of its most thrilling wins of the season on Saturday with a late upset over Boston University (15-11, 10-5 PL) in front of an electric home crowd, 55-54.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Sophomore Jade Edwards led the team with her second consecutive double-double, fourth of the season, bringing down a dozen rebounds alongside her 15 points, including the last-second free throw that clinched the victory.
  • Senior Kaitlyn Marenyi added another 13 points followed by sophomore Maddie Doring who hit 10 in her seventh career start.
  • Junior Indeya Sanders pitched in a career-high 10 assists to go along with her eight rebounds and seven points. She also added a team-high two steals.
  • The Eagles shot 34 percent (17-50) from the field, 27.8 percent (5-18) from three, and 88.9 percent (16-18) from the line, including a perfect 7-for-7 from Marenyi.
  • The Terriers also had three players in double-figures, starting with Maren Durant who hit 11 before fouling out with 1:50 left in the game. Maggie Pina also added 11 followed by 10 from Sydney Johnson.
  • BU closed shooting 48.9 percent (22-45) from the floor, 41.7 percent (5-12) from three, and 50 percent (5-10) from the charity stripe.
  • This is the second time AU has pulled off the victory despite shooting worse than the opponent. The first was Lehigh on January 29.
  • Although American gave up 15 miscues to BU's 11, the Eagles led the Terriers in points off turnovers, 13-4. AU also held the advantage in second chance opportunities, 11-4, and fast break points, 5-3, while BU led in the paint, 32-20, and from the bench, 10-5.
  • The Terriers jumped to an early 5-0 lead before a 4-0 solo run from senior Morgan Bartner delivered the first of the day's two tied scores. Doring followed that up with a three to put the Eagles ahead for the first time, but BU was quick to respond, hitting an 8-2 closing run to take a 13-10 lead heading into the first break.
  • Boston continued to build on its advantage in the second quarter, gapping the Eagles by eight points at 21-13 heading into the first media timeout. Marenyi hit a pair of free throws coming out of the huddle before both teams hit a two-minute dry spell, holding the score at 21-15 before another set of Bartner free throws narrowed the margin back down to four points.
  • A jumper from Katie Nelson put Boston back up by six before back-to-back baskets from Edwards in the final minute of the half put the Eagles just one point away at 23-22. The Terriers would have the last say, though, as a last-second three from Pina rattled home to send the teams into the locker room at 26-22.
  • Neither team found its footing offensively in the early minutes of the second half, as Boston rebuilt its 8-point lead off a 4-0 run over the first four minutes of the stanza.
  • A quick layup from Doring coming out of the media timeout swung the momentum in AU's favor, as the Eagles hit a 9-2 run to edge back to within one at 34-33.
  • The Terriers widened the gap back to six briefly, but a late three points from Marenyi sent the Eagles into the final 10 minutes trailing by three at 39-36.
  • It was all AU in the final quarter as American opened with 13 unanswered points, including five from sophomore Taylor Brown, to take a 10-point lead at 49-39 with just over five minutes remaining.
  • Boston battled back behind a six-point effort from Riley Childs to cut the Eagles' lead back down to four with 2:21 left on the clock. Childs grabbed an offensive rebound and started on the fast break but a drawn charge from Edwards on the other end stopped the play and send BU's Durant to the bench with her fifth foul of the day.
  • The Eagles couldn't capitalize on the next possession as a bad pass sent Boston back on the offensive with Irving hitting the layup to bring the Terriers back within two.
  • Drawn fouls from Edwards and Marenyi put them each on the line in the final 20 seconds of the game. They went 3-for-4 to maintain AU's three-point advantage, but a made three from Pina erased that lead and tied the game at 54-54 with only four seconds left on the clock.
  • American advanced the ball and an inbound pass found Edwards on the fast break where she was fouled by Mackenzie Miers. With only 0.03 left on the clock she hit 1 of 2 to secure the 55-54 win.
  • Boston entered the game tied for second in the league alongside Colgate while the Eagles sat in seventh. BU now falls to third with three games left in the regular season. The Eagles remain at seventh but are only one game out of fifth or sixth with Holy Cross and Lehigh tied at 8-7 in the league. AU split the series with Lehigh, and will face Holy Cross in Bender on February 29 for Senior Day.
