WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team (6-10, 2-4 PL) couldn't keep pace with one of the top teams in the country from the perimeter and fell to Holy Cross (11-6, 4-2 PL), 72-59, on the road.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Kaitlyn Marenyi continues to lead the Eagles through Patriot League play as she tied her career-high with 24 points to take charge for AU.
- Sophomore Jade Edwards also landed in double-figures with 11 as all 10 Eagles who played added to the final score sheet.
- Junior Indeya Sanders brought down a team-high nine boards while pitching in five assists.
- The Eagles closed shooting 43.8 percent (21-48) from the field but struggled from three-point range, landing only three of their 17 attempts while Holy Cross put up 13 of 27 (.481) from the perimeter.
- PL Preseason Player of the Year Lauren Manis led for the Crusaders with 22 along with her game-high 15 rebounds, followed by 18 points from Avery LaBarbera.
- Early turnovers haunted the Eagles as they gave up seven to open the game with a 10-point deficit before sophomore Maddie Doring got the Eagles on the board with a layup after picking up the steal on the other end.
- American picked up the pace offensively from there, as Marenyi threw up her first trey of the day followed by one from Doring to bring the Eagles back within two at 10-8 with 3:14 left in the stanza.
- AU cut to within one on two occasions after a pair of baskets from Edwards and sophomore Emily Fisher, but Holy Cross' fourth trey of the day closed the quarter at 18-14.
- Struggles from the perimeter during the second quarter haunted the Eagles, as they went 0-for-4 while the Crusaders hit 5-for-7 to lead the stanza, 25-14.
- A quick four points from freshman Karla Vres and sophomore Laura Graytok to open the quarter tied the game at 18-18, but a scoreless 2:40 halted the Eagles' advance as they fell to an 11-point deficit.
- Three consecutive three's from Manis spread the gap to 43-24 before late free throws Marenyi brought the Eagles back within 15 at 28-43 heading into the locker room.
- American matched Holy Cross basket-for-basket through the third, but struggled to get stops defensively as the Crusaders maintained their cushion. A final-second layup from Manis sent the teams into the final break at 63-46.
- For the second consecutive game, Marenyi took control of the Eagles' offense in the fourth quarter. She picked up six of AU's 13 points as American led in its only quarter of the game, 13-9.
