FAIRFAX, Va. — Sophomore Malachy McGovern scored in the 11th minute for American, but a pair of first-half goals by George Mason spoiled the head coaching debut of Zach Samol on Friday evening.

Postgame Notes

• McGovern's goal in the 11th minute was his first collegiate goal as he stuffed in a ball from six yards away.
• Senior Tim Neumann and senior Fabio Massaro were credited with assists on McGovern's goal. 
• George Mason was led by Ryan Mingachos and Tunde Akinlosotu who scored in the 18th and 32nd minutes, respectively.
• Mason outshot American 11-8.
• Junior keeper Jake Agnew made three saves in his AU debut. Mason's keeper Tillman Theurich made two saves.
