AU Game Notes
WASHINGTON - The final non-conference game for American University men's basketball is a challenging one against local rival Georgetown, set for noon on Saturday, Dec. 28. The game will be played at Capital One Arena in D.C., and will air live on Fox Sports 1 (FS1). The Eagles (4-6) have not beaten the Hoyas (9-3) since the early 1980s, and Georgetown comes into the game receiving votes in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- AU is 4-6 heading into its final non-conference game, and coming off a 77-74 loss versus Stony Brook last Saturday.
- Senior Mark Gasperini led the Eagles with a season-high 17 points and game-high eight rebounds against Stony Brook.
- Sophomore Jacob Boonyasith also scored a season-high 17 points on Saturday, making a season-high four three-pointers.
- Senior point guard Sa'eed Nelson leads the Eagles this season with 16.4 points per game and 4.7 assists per game. Nelson recently became the first in Patriot League history to amass 1,600 points, 400 assists and 200 steals.
- The Eagles are near the top of the PL in several categories, including scoring (3rd, 73.7), 3-point FG PCT (2nd, 38.9), and steals (2nd, 7.1).
- Seventh-year AU head coach Mike Brennan spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Georgetown under John Thompson III. This will be his first time coaching against Georgetown since leaving the program.
- The Eagles will conclude their series of games against teams with "George" in their name when they take on Georgetown.
- American already took down George Washington last month before falling to George Mason earlier this month.
- Nelson started the season in seventh place all-time at AU in career scoring, and moved into the top five on November 26 by scoring 25 points in a win vs. Howard. He needs 329 points to leap fellow New Jersian Russell 'Boo' Bowers for the all-time lead.
SCOUTING THE HOYAS
- Georgetown enters the contest against American riding a five-game winning streak.
- The Hoyas and Eagles share two common opponents in UMBC and Mount St. Mary's. Both teams are 2-0 against those opponents.
- Omer Yurtseven recorded career-highs in points and rebounds in a win over Samford last Saturday, scoring 32 points and grabbing 17 rebounds.
- Mac McClung has already been named Big East Player of the Week twice in the first two months of action this season.
- Naismith Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing, a 17-year NBA star and former three-time All-American at Georgetown, is in his third season as head coach of the Hoyas.
ALL-TIME SERIES
- Georgetown has a commanding, 43-10 lead in the all-time series with AU.
- The Hoyas have won nine straight and 16 of the last 17. The Eagles' last win was in 1982.
- The most recent meeting was seven years ago, resulting in a 65-48 Georgetown win on Dec. 22, 2012.
