WASHINGTON - Looking to repeat last week's home success, the American University men's basketball team will host UMBC at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3. The game will be streamed on the Patriot League Network and also aired live on NBC Sports Washington. The Eagles come in at 2-4 overall while the Retrievers stand at 5-3.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- AU is 2-4 so far and coming off a tough game at Albany where a 19-point first-half lead failed to hold up in a 68-64 loss.
- Senior Sa'eed Nelson is fifth all-time at AU with 1,675 points.
- With seven assists at Albany, Nelson he became the first in Patriot League history with 1,600 points, 400 assists and 200 steals.
- Jamir Harris, who hit 6-of-9 three-pointers at Saint Francis, averages 13.3 ppg and has hit 12-of-13 free throws.
- The Eagles lead the PL with 4.0 blocks per game and rank second with 73.8 ppg and 36.7 % 3-point FG shooting.
- In addition to Nelson and Harris, two others also average in double figures in scoring for AU. Jacob Boonyasith, who grabbed a career-high nine rebounds to lead the Eagles vs. Howard, is averaging 12.8 ppg. Stacy Beckton Jr. has a team-best 6.3 rpg to go with 10.2 ppg.
- American was picked third in the PL Preseason Poll. The Eagles finished the 2018-19 season tied for fourth.
SCOUTING THE RETRIEVERS
- UMBC snapped a three-game losing streak with an 85-60 home win vs. Drexel on Saturday. The Retrievers are just 1-3 away from home this season.
- Junior guard Darnell Rogers was named to the Jersey Mike's Jamaica Classic All-Tournament Team after averaging 14.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg and 2.5 apg during the tournament.
- Rogers, who missed the Drexel game with a hyperextended leg, leads the team with 14 ppg, shooting at 44.6 percent. Senior K.J. Jackson and junior Dimitrije Spasojevic average 12.8 and 10.9 ppg, respectively.
- UMBC is two seasons removed from the most historic upset of the NCAA Tournament, a 16-seed win over top-seeded Virginia in the 2018 NCAA First Round.
