Eagles Battle to Late Road Victory Over Radford

WASHINGTON - The American University women's basketball team (3-6) surged to its first road victory of the season on Sunday with late win over Radford, 59-55.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Four of the five starters paced the Eagles to their most well-rounded scoring effort of the season, starting with senior Kaitlyn Marenyi's 16-point effort. Junior Indeya Sanders added a season-high 15, followed by 13 from sophomore Jade Edwards and a career-high 11 from sophomore Taylor Brown.
  • Sanders filled the score sheet with a team-high eight rebounds, team-high four assists, one block, and one steal while only giving up two turnovers in her 37 minutes of play.
  • Freshman Karla Vres led the team with three blocks in her 16 minutes, and was one of two Eagles to not give up a single turnover alongside sophomore Laura Graytok.
  • American closed shooting 48.1 percent from the floor (25-52), 29.4 percent from three (5-17), and 50 percent from the line (4-8).
  • The Highlanders were led by a 17-point performance from Makaila Wilson, who shot an impressive 5-for-9 from long range.
  • Aiden Rainford led on the boards with seven rebounds followed by six from Amele Ngwafang.
  • Khiana Johnson pitched in a game-high eight assist.
  • Radford hit 38.5 percent from the field (20-52), 45.5 percent from the perimeter (10-22), and 50 percent from the line (5-10).
  • Early baskets from all five starters gave AU the first lead the game as Radford was held to only one field goal in the first 5:30 of the game. By the first quarter media timeout, the Eagles led 8-4.
  • The Highlanders, who entered the game off a season-high 57.9 percent (11-19) performance from three against Ohio State, started to threaten AU from the perimeter coming out of the timeout. A pair of long range baskets from Wilson, along with a layup from Ngwafang, gave Radford its first lead of the game at 12-10 with just under 2:00 left in the stanza.
  • Brown responded for the Eagles, hitting a three of her own to retake the lead but a final jumper from Wilson with 59 seconds left on the clock gave Radford the lead that would last for the remainder of the half.
  • Radford took advantage of an AU scoring drought in the opening minutes of the second quarter, and by the 5:52 mark had picked up a seven-point lead at 22-15.
  • The Eagles trimmed that lead back down to two behind a 5-0 run from Marenyi, and a 4-0 run from Vres and Edwards two minutes later sent the teams into the break at 25-24.
  • American jumped back ahead after a layup from Brown and Marenyi's second trey of the game brought the score up to 29-27 at the 7:09 mark in the third, but an 8-2 Radford run put the Highlanders back ahead for the remainder of the quarter.
  • With under 1:00 left in the stanza, Radford had picked up its largest lead of the half at 42-36, but Sanders quickly shifted momentum back in AU's favor after she was fouled on the drive for a quick three points with 20 seconds left to bring AU back within three, 42-39.
  • It was a back-and-forth battle between the two teams throughout the fourth quarter, with the Eagles drawing even at 43-43 after layups from Sanders and Brown.
  • The Highlanders retook the lead briefly but a clutch 5-0 AU run and a massive Sanders block on a corner three from Radford's Wilson sent the Eagles on an 16-4 closing run over the final 5:50.
  • Edwards led with six points down the stretch, followed by four each from Sanders and Marenyi.
  • The Eagles dominated in the paint, 40-16, and led in second chance points, 6-5, while Radford held the advantage in points off turnovers, 17-6, and fast break points, 6-0.
