WASHINGTON
- In the first game of the week after final exams, the American University men's basketball team heads north to Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, Md., for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Tuesday, Dec. 17. AU comes in at 3-5 overall this season, with a couple less games under its belt than 3-7 Mount St. Mary's. Just three non-conference games remain for the Eagles.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES
  • AU had an up and down week before the exam break. The Eagles beat UMBC 85-61 on Dec. 3 and shot a season-best 59 percent from the field, but fell 68-53 at George Mason on Dec. 7 after struggling in the second half.
  • Leading the effort at Mason was senior Mark Gasperini with season highs of both 13 points and nine rebounds.
  • Senior Sa'eed Nelson, who leads AU with 17 points per game, has 1,699 points to rank fifth all-time in program history.
  • With seven assists at Albany, Nelson became the first in Patriot League history with 1,600 points, 400 assists and 200 steals.
  • AU is shooting 46.2% from the field and 36.4% from 3-point range, with both ranking second among all PL teams.
  • Sophomore Jacob Boonyasith ranks second on the team with 12.1 ppg and is shooting 48.6 percent from long range (17-of-35). Junior Jamir Harris is right behind him at 11.5 ppg and has hit a team-best 19 three-pointers.
  • American was picked third in the PL Preseason Poll. The Eagles finished the 2018-19 season tied for fourth.
SCOUTING THE MOUNT
  • Mount St. Mary's started 1-5 this year before beating Utah Valley and Howard in back-to-back games. The Mount is 2-1 at home, recently falling 64-48 to Loyola Maryland.
  • Despite a strong defensive effort and allowing just 66.7 points per game, the Mount have come up short offensively with just 61.5 ppg.
  • Leading the way are Jalen Gibbs (12.4 ppg) and Damian Chong Qui (12.1 ppg).
  • Mount St. Mary's struggled last year as well, finishing at 9-22 and 6-12 in the NEC. The Mount returned 97 percent of its scoring and 95 percent of its minutes played from the 2018-19 season.
ALL-TIME SERIES
  • AU has a 34-32 lead in the all-time series which dates back to 1941.
  • The Mount have won the last three straight games including a nail-biting, 56-55 decision at Bender Arena last season.
  • The Eagles' last win was an even more low-scoring affair, 46-45 in Washington in the 2014-15 season.

UP NEXT

  • American will be back at home vs. Stony Brook on Dec. 21, in a 2 p.m. game that will be broadcast both on NBC Sports Washington and the Patriot League Network.
