WASHINGTON – Double-figure efforts from sophomore
Jade Edwards and senior
Kaitlyn Marenyi, including the first double-double of the season for Edwards, wasn't enough to carry the Eagles past Buffalo on Sunday as the Eagles fell in the second and final game of the Hawk Classic, 73-55.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- For the second consecutive game, Edwards was back atop the Eagles' score sheet with 14 points along with 11 boards for her first double-double of the year.
- Marenyi was close behind with a dozen points after shooting 4-for-12 from three.
- Junior Indeya Sanders led with seven assists and three steals.
- American closed shooting 32.3 percent from the floor (21-65) and 20.8 percent from three (5-24).
- The Eagles limited the No. 2 scorer in the country, Dyaisha Fair (26.4 ppg), to only 12 points, while Theresa Onwuka (22.0 ppg) led the Bulls with 18. Elea Gaba put up the second and final double-double of the day with a dozen points and 11 rebounds.
- Buffalo, who entered the weekend averaging 17.8 offensive boards per game, were held to only eight against the Eagles while AU pulled down a game-high nine. The Bulls led AU on the defensive end, though, 35-23, for a total of 43-32 in rebounds.
- The Eagles held Buffalo to only six second-chance points and 12 fast break points, but Buffalo led AU in the paint, 36-24, and points off turnovers, 21-13.
- American came away with key defensive stops to open the game, forcing three turnovers and grabbing four defensive rebounds in the first six minutes of play, but couldn't capitalize on the offensive end and entered the media timeout trailing 15-4 after shooting 2-for-8 from the floor.
- Baskets from Edwards and Vres down the stretch kept the Eagles within striking distance, though, as they chipped away to land back within five at 16-11 with just over 1:00 left in the stanza.
- A final layup from Buffalo's Keowa Walters brought the Bulls back up by seven by the end of the first quarter, 18-11.
- The Eagles continued to respond to Buffalo's runs throughout the first half of the second quarter, but an 11-0 Buffalo run to close the half built up the biggest lead of the game so far at 40-20.
- By the end of the half, the Eagles were held to 25 percent from the floor (7-28) and 22.2 percent from three (2-9), while Buffalo was hitting 55.6 percent from the floor (15-27), but only 11.1 percent from three (1-9). The Bulls were also outworking AU on the boards, 22-10.
- Eagles' defense came in strong in the third, holding Buffalo scoreless for over 2:30 while baskets from Fisher, Brown and Bartner hit baskets to cut the 21-point lead down to 14 with 2:54 left on the clock.
- A three from Jessika Schiffer pulled the Bulls back up by 17, but once again the Eagles had a response as a quick four points from Edwards tightened the score to 56-43.
- A pair of final Buffalo baskets sent the teams into the final break at 58-43.
- A quick 5-0 AU run in the early minutes of the fourth quarter brought the Eagles back within 13, but AU fell short of breaking any closer and ended the game with the 73-55 loss.
