Field Hockey Holds Off Lafayette for PL Regular Season Title

WASHINGTON - A first-quarter goal from sophomore Hannah Moser was enough to lift the American University field hockey team (11-5, 6-0 PL) to its first Patriot League regular season title since 2013 after the Eagles overcame the previously-undefeated Lafayette Leopards (11-7, 5-1 PL) for the right to host the Patriot League Tournament next weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • This is the ninth time since 2001 that Head Coach Steve Jennings has led the Eagles to an undefeated regular-season in Patriot League play. This also marks the 11th regular season title for American, and first since the 2013 season.
  • It was a battle of the defensive lines, as the Eagles held Lafayette, a team that averaged 12.8 shots per game coming into the game, to only four over the 60 minutes of play. American, on the other hand, got off 11 shots, but only four on goal.
  • Moser hit the game winner midway through the first quarter after a long run along the end line put her just off the post where she slid the ball under the oncoming Lafayette goalkeeper.
  • It was a tight match through the remaining three quarters, with neither team getting a shot off in the second before the Leopards started putting on the pressure in the third. But another solid defensive effort from the Eagles and three clutch saves from senior goalkeeper Caroline Miller, kept Lafayette at bay.
  • After failing to draw a penalty corner opportunity during Tuesday's 1-0 loss to No. 2 Maryland, American was able to pick up four on Saturday while allowing none.
