Volleyball Clinches PL Tournament No. 1 Seed on Senior Day with 15th Straight Win

WASHINGTON - There is much to celebrate for the American University volleyball team as the Eagles (22-7, 15-1) clinched hosting rights to next weekend's Patriot League Championships with a sweep of Lafayette (5-24, 2-13) on Saturday afternoon. The Senior Day win was the 15th straight victory for AU, who will be the No. 1 seed and host the tournament for the 17th time in the 19 years since joining the PL in 2001.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles had no trouble in the first two sets, winning 25-12 and 25-12, and were able to hold off a run by Lafayette to take the third set 25-20.
  • For the match, AU hit an impressive .392 as a team with 37 kills to just eight errors, while Lafayette hit .027 with 22 kills and 20 errors.
  • The Eagles finished with a 9-3 lead in service aces, and a 9-3.5 lead in total blocks.
  • Zeynep Uzen was the only player in the short match to reach double figures in kills, posting 10 of them with a hitting percentage of .400. She also served up a career-best four aces.
  • Helena Elbaek finished with eight kills and hit .400, Aleksandra Sochacka posted seven kills and a hitting percentage of .462, and Vela McBride knocked down five kills on six attempts with no errors for a match-best percentage of .833.
  • Defensively, Kristen Largay led all players with 10 digs and McBride led all players with five blocks.
  • Largay, McBride, Sochacka and Jeanne Westney were honored prior to the match for Senior Day.
PATRIOT LEAGUE TOURNAMENT
  • The Eagles will have a bye for the PL Quarterfinal round on Tuesday.
  • AU will host both the semifinals and the championship, with the semis set for 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 23, and the championship set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24.
  • As the top seed, AU will play the lowest remaining seed remaining after the quarterfinals.
  • Regardless of AU's opponent, the Eagles' semifinal game will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The full bracket is TBA.
