WASHINGTON - Two road games await the American University men's basketball team this week, starting with a local rival game at George Washington on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m. (ESPN+). GW is 1-1 so far while AU is off to an 0-2 start after losses at Siena and against William & Mary.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
- Senior and Preseason Patriot League Player of the Year Sa'eed Nelson led the team with 22 points vs. William and Mary.Â
- In his American debut, junior Jamir Harris led the Eagles with a team-high 20 points in their loss at Siena, hitting 6-of-11 field goals including 4-of-6 three-pointers.
- Sophomore Jacob Boonyasith is 10-of-16 from the field (.625) through AU's first two games, and hit three of five shots from long range in the home opener vs. W&M.
- AU's 80 points were high for a team that averaged 72 points per game in 2018-19, but Siena took an early lead and made 11 three-pointers to the Eagles' six.
- American was picked third in the Patriot League Preseason Coaches Poll. The Eagles finished the 2018-19 season tied for fourth place and hosted their first PL Tournament Quarterfinal game since 2014.Â
- Nelson and classmate Mark Gasperini combined to average 30.1 points per game last season, or 42 percent of AU's total points. .Â
- Junior Stacy Beckton Jr. is the third-highest returning scorer for the Eagles, and improved from 4.4 ppg as a freshman to 10.0 ppg as a sophomore.
SCOUTING THE COLONIALS
- GW is 1-1 so far this season and coming off a 76-62 win over Howard on Saturday at home.
- Senior Arnaldo Toro had 22 points and 18 rebounds in the win.Â
- Freshman Jameer Nelson, Jr. had an impressive 11 assists to go with eight points in his second career game.
- GW is coming off a 9-24 season and has a brand new head coach in Jamion Christian.
- The Colonials returned three starters from last year including Justin Mazzula who averaged 8.9 points per game and was the only Colonial to start in all 33 games.
ALL-TIME SERIES
- American holds a 24-21 lead all-time vs. GW, but the Colonials have won 11 of the last 11 and have an 11-9 edge in games played in the Smith Center.
- AU took GW to overtime last season before falling 71-67.
