Field Hockey Earns Seventh Straight with Win Over Colgate

WASHINGTON - Junior Noor Coenen tied her career-high and two freshmen picked up their first career goals as the American University field hockey team (10-4, 5-0 PL) picked up a dominant 7-1 victory against Colgate (2-13, 0-6 PL) on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • This was the last regular season road trip for the Eagles as they now look to their final two games at home against Maryland (Oct. 29) and Lafayette (Nov. 2) before the Patriot League Tournament.
  • This was the seventh consecutive win for American and the fifth Patriot League victory as the team remains atop the league rankings alongside Lafayette with undefeated records.
  • Junior Noor Coenen paced the Eagles with four goals on the day, tying her career-high from 2017 and picking up her second hat trick of the season.
  • Freshmen Abby Kreider and Julia Kraft also highlighted the score sheet with their first career goals while sophomore Hannah Moser closed out scoring with her sixth of the season.
  • Moser also contributed one of the six assists on the day alongside juniors Lauren Fredricks, Gaby de Kock and Ella Arata, sophomore Josie Formica, and freshman Hailee Arrington.
  • It was a midfield battle to start, with the Eagles not getting their first look at goal until the fifth minute when Arrington and freshman Charllene Boshoff put up a pair of shots after the game's first penalty corner.
  • American capitalized off the next penalty corner opportunity with Coenen picking up her first goal of the day off assists from both Fredricks and de Kock.
  • That would prove to be the final look on goal for either team as the first quarter closed with the 1-0 advantage to AU.
  • Colgate tied the score briefly midway through the second quarter with Nora Mulroy putting one away over freshman goalkeeper Fiona Minter.
  • The Eagles were quick to respond, though, as Coenen added her second with a low shot after after a pass in from Moser.
  • American maintained that 2-1 edge heading into halftime, despite a late shot from sophomore Atina Pagani which was saved by Raiders' goalkeeper Anna Unger.
  • It was all AU during the second half, starting with a goal from Kreider who picked up the rebound after a shot from Coenen for her first career goal.
  • Moser added her goal less than four minutes later, taking in a long pass from Formica and beating the Colgate keeper one-on-one.
  • The Eagles continued building the gap in the fourth quarter with Coenen picking up the hat trick with a penalty stroke in the fourth minute. She followed with her fourth and final goal of the day less than a minute later after picking up the steal at the top of the Raiders' circle.
  • Kraft waited until the final seconds of the game to add her name to the score sheet for the first time in her career. With less than two seconds on the clock, she picked up a pass in from Arrington and Arata to slam home her shot into the low right corner.
HEAR FROM COACH JENNINGS
"The team did a great job of creating chances today and ramped up our finishing in the second half. We had some great execution in the circle and the deep defense did well to limit Colgate's chances.

"We need to keep our focus and continue to refine important elements of our game heading into the final week of the regular season. We will have some big challenges ahead and I know the team is excited for the opportunity."

NEXT UP
AU will close its season at home with a 3 p.m. start against local rival Maryland on Tuesday, Oct. 29, followed by Lafayette at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. The Eagles will celebrate its two graduating seniors, Caroline Miller and Jette Dieckmann, on Nov. 2 before facing the Leopards.
