Volleyball Takes Down Army in Three Sets for Eighth Straight Win

WASHINGTON - The win streak continues for the American University volleyball team as the Eagles (15-7, 8-1) swept visiting Army (15-7, 6-3) on Friday in straight sets for their eighth straight victory. On Saturday, AU will face conference-leading Colgate, with the Raiders coming in at 9-0 in Patriot League play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • AU had a strong first two sets, committing just two hitting errors in each and winning 25-20 and 25-17. The third set was more back and forth, but the Eagles maintained a slim lead most of the way and won 25-21.
  • The Eagles reached double digits in total blocks (10) for a second straight match. Freshman Onuchi Ndee led the way with five, while senior Jeanne Westney and freshman Asli Celikkol were right behind with four blocks apiece.
  • Celikkol got AU off to a strong start with five kills and zero errors in the opening set. She finished with nine kills, tying junior Helena Elbaek for team-high honors.
  • Senior libero Kristen Largay led all players with 18 digs, and now stands just 21 digs away from tying the school record in career digs (1,865 - Natasha Sylvain).
  • AU, already ranked third in NCAA Division I in service aces per set, posted eight aces in the win. Six of those came from juniors Olivia Wassner and Chiara Bosetti who served up three apiece.
QUOTED
  • "We're happy to get away with this win in three sets so we can get some rest tonight with a big game coming up tomorrow. Three, five, four, whatever it is, we just try to get better. We got some good contributions tonight from a lot of players and that was great. We were hitting the ball very well the first two sets and our block was on, so that's a formula for success. We're quite happy with the win and looking forward to tomorrow." - Head Coach Barry Goldberg
