WASHINGTON - The second half of the Patriot League season begins this weekend for the American University volleyball team, and the Eagles (14-7, 7-1) take a seven-match win streak into home games vs. Army West Point (15-6, 6-2) on Friday, Oct. 25 (7 p.m.) and league-leading Colgate (15-5, 8-0) on Saturday, Oct. 26 (4 p.m.).
GAME NOTES
BENDER PINK OUT
- Saturday's match vs. Colgate has been designated as the annual Bender Pink Out in recognition of national breast cancer awareness month.Â
- Members of the AU volleyball team will wear commemorative Bender Pink Out shirts during warm-up to help raise awareness for breast cancer.
- The Bender Pink Out is a partnership with AU Athletics Marketing, the Beta Theta Pi fraternity, the Phi Mu and Phi Sigma Sigma sororities, AU's Health Promotion and Advocacy Center, as well as members of AU Fraternity and Sorority Life who are proud to come together with AU Volleyball in the fight towards ending breast cancer.Â
- Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the match to show their support for this effort, and can purchase their very own Bender Pink Out t-shirt in the lobby prior to entering Bender Arena.Â
AU NOTES
- AU has won seven straight matches and currently ranks second in the Patriot League, trailing only undefeated Colgate after a road loss to the Raiders in the PL opener on Sept. 27.
- Most recently, the Eagles prevailed in five sets over visiting Loyola Maryland on Tuesday, Oct. 22.Â
- Patriot League Rookie of the Week Zeynep Uzen totaled a team-best 17 kills vs. Loyola and made it her third career double-double with 11 digs.
- Junior Olivia Wassner was one kill away from a triple-double on Tuesday, adding a career-high nine kills to a career-high 19 digs and 40 assists. She also served up a career best six aces, posted four blocks and led all players in the match with a hitting percentage of .421.
- Wassner currently ranks fifth in NCAA Division I with 0.63 service aces per set, and the Eagles rank third in the nation with 2.00 aces per set.
- Freshman Onuchi Ndee leads all players in the league with her .363 hitting percentage, and senior Kristen Largay's 4.39 digs per set rank third.
- Largay has 334 digs this season and needs just 39 more to tie the all-time school record of 1,865 digs set by Natasha Sylvain in 1994.
- Helena Elbaek leads AU with 3.32 kills per set which ranks her sixth in the PL.
SCOUTING ARMY WEST POINT
- Army is right behind AU in the Patriot League standings, ranking third with a record of 6.2.
- The Black Knights have won four straight matches, dropping only two sets.
- Army uses a balanced attack that has four players averaging between 2-3 kills per set, and two players averaging between 5-6 assists per set.
- Sophomore Emmy Barnhorst (2.49 k/s, 1.07 bps) is the PL Player of the Week.
ARMY WEST POINT SERIES HISTORY
- AU leads Army 40-8 all-time and is 13-3 at home since 2006.Â
- The Eagles beat the Black Knights 3-1 earlier this season on the road, but split matches last year with each team winning at home.
SCOUTING COLGATE
- Colgate is alone atop the Patriot League standings with a record of 8-0, and has gone 15-5 overall this season.
- Junior Alli Lowe leads the league with 3.99 kills per set while sophomore Julia Kurowski's 10.32 assists per set are also the most in the PL.
- AU is 20-1 all-time at home against Colgate since 2006, and had won 16 straight matches overall vs. the Raiders until earlier this season.
COLGATE SERIES HISTORY
- Since 1996, American holds a 43-5 advantage in the all-time series against Colgate.Â
- Earlier this season, AU had a 16-match win streak snapped by the Raiders in a 3-1 road loss.
