Aces Abound in Volleyball's Sweep of Holy Cross

WORCESTER, Mass. - Junior Olivia Wassner served up a career-high five aces and the American University volleyball team totaled nine overall as the Eagles (12-7, 5-1) rolled to a three-set win at Holy Cross (3-18, 0-7) by scores of 27-25, 25-13 and 25-17.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • There were six ties in a tight first set - the only close set of the night.
  • The Eagles had two set-points thwarted by the Crusaders before a Wassner ace finally ended it in favor of AU, 27-25.
  • American cruised to a second-set win, hitting .458 with 13 kills and just two errors while Holy Cross committed nine errors and posted only six kills.
  • An impressive seven aces were served by the Eagles in the third set, and a 6-0 run near the midway point put AU safely in the lead.
  • Freshman Zeynep Uzen, already the Eagles' leader in kills in Patriot League matches, continued her run with a match-best 10 kills. She added eight digs, and hit .360 for the match.
  • Senior Kristen Largay led AU with 10 digs, and continues to inch closer to the all-time program record.
  • Wassner's five aces were in addition to 28 assists, eight digs and three blocks. Already in the top 15 in the nation in aces per set, she will almost certainly move higher up that list after her performance at Holy Cross.
  • Junior Helena Elbaek hit .500 with nine kills, and senior Jeanne Westney hit .357 with eight kills while also adding three blocks and two aces.
QUOTED
  • "We played a very close first set and made a few big blocks at the end to lead us to the win. Our confidence grew and set two we played with more consistency and were strong all the way through. Both Zeynep and Helena hit well and the blocking continued as we closed out the match." - Head coach Barry Goldberg
