PROVO, Utah – Aleksandra Kazala had eight kills and 13 digs, but 13th-seeded Brigham Young used a balanced offense and outstanding defense to earn a 25-11, 25-17, 25-16 victory over American University in a first-round match of the NCAA Volleyball Tournament.

The Eagles ended their season with a 26-8 record and had an 18-match winning streak snapped before a loud crowd of 2,942 at Smith Fieldhouse.

The host Cougars are now 29-2 and advance to Saturday's second-round match with Oregon. The Ducks swept Kennesaw State in Friday's opening match. BYU, despite its No. 13 seed in the tournament, was ranked seventh in the most recent national coaches poll.

The Eagles were plagued with attack errors in the match, getting 23 kills, but suffering 20 errors.

Libero Kristen Largay finished with 12 digs and the Eagles got 16 assists from Kennedy Etheridge.

Veronica Jones-Perry had 13 kills to lead the Cougars, who got 11 kills from McKenna Miller and 10 from Cosy Burnett.

American was making its fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and its 15th in the last 17 seasons.
