Loren McKenzie had eight blocks to lead American University to a 25-10, 25-14, 25-8 victory at Delaware State in a non-conference volleyball match on Wednesday night.
The Eagles, who have won six of their last seven matches, improved to 12-6 overall. The homestanding Hornets fell to 0-14 on the year.
American hit .475, finished with 16 aces as a team and had 10 team blocks in a strong overall performance.
"This match was a good opportunity for us to continue working on our team game," said AU head coach Barry Goldberg. "Our attack and block seems to be improving. I'm hopeful we can continue that throughout our league competition."
A six-point run on
Shannon Webb's serve gave AU an 11-3 lead in the opening set. The Eagles extended their edge to 18-6 and 20-7 while closing out the victory.
Sochacka had four aces in an early seven-point run that gave American an 8-1 lead in the second. Del State came within 20-14, but Sochacka came to the line to serve the final six points, including her fifth and sixth ace of the set, to finish the win.
The Hornets led 4-3 early in the third when Webb served AU to a 12-4 advantage. From a 16-7 lead, AU finished the set with a 9-1 run that gave AU nine-straight set victories.
American travels to Army West Point on Friday at 7:00 between teams still unbeaten in Patriot League play. The Eagles then move to Holy Cross on Saturday at 4:00.
